Ministry Of Air Club Championships
Saturday 13th December 2003 - held at Aldenham School Sports Centre with a Disco party to follow at a local school.
The competition was run in accordance with the National Graded Structure, Grade 1 to Grade 5, with virtually the full Club attending. We put the younger competitors into their Age Groups for 2004, thus enabling them to treat this competition as part of their preparation for the 2004 season.
Overall winner (highest score over two rounds), & thus Club Champion was Graham Williams, in second place Kayleigh McCarthy, and third was Charlotte O'Shea. (spookily these last two places were exactly the same as last year)
Also congratulations to Sarah Hiesler & Gemma Davis who qualified to Grade 4 for the 2004 season as a result of their performances at this competition.
Club performances at the Competition are shown below.

Grade 2 London, Walton-On-Thames, Elmbridge Leisure Centre,
Hosted by Top Flight, and promised to be a very long day with over 400 entries.
We went with just 2 of our Grade 2s, we also entered 2 Grade 1s aiming to retain their Grade 1 qualification
Julie Gooderick Despite looking good in Warm-ups, Julie missed her target by a long way in the Set, she realised that retaining Grade 2 marks was now too difficult, and elected to try out a new routine in preparation for next year. Picked up a personal best for Tariff as a consequence
Grace Kocks Overlapping domestic appointments made it impossible for Grace to attend. Grace joins Julie in return to Grade 3, but hopefully for only one competition, and then back to Grade 2
Jonathan Prazer & Chris Tilley both got the required scores as expected and remain at Grade 1 for next year - Well done men!

Brentwood Open
Hosted by Brentwood Trampoline Club, this competition is open to all Grades, however we took only our Grade 5s, as an opportunity for them to gain some additional experience, prior to the Grade 3 - 6 coming in October, also we entered Julie Gooderick for some practice prior to the last Grade 2 of the season. Kayleigh McCarthy also entered just for the sheer enjoyment of competitng.
Good all round work by everyone, and the experience will prove invaluable. For Kirsten Stanbrough and Jessica Impson Davey it was their first ever competition.
Their performances (including tariff) at the Competition are shown below.
All but Katherine Souto-Mills accomplished new Personal Bests (Katherine equaled hers).

Recoil Invitational
Hosted by Recoil Trampoline Club, this competition is open to all Grades, however we took only our Grade 5s, as an opportunity for them to move up a grade. The tariff at Grade 5 does not count at the competition, however we took note of the tariff that our members performed in order to complete the assessment of their achievements.
Our team included 2 first-times, amazingly with eight competitors we came away with 2 silvers, 2 bronzes, and 6 Team medals.
Grade 5 Under 15 F
Bethany Carter First ever competition for Bethany, strolled in with two outstanding routines and came 2nd in a strong field, Bethany qualified to move to Grade 4.
Lucy Harris Only the second competition for Lucy, and the most graceful and competitive we've seen her, delighted to come 3rd. Lucy qualified to move to Grade 4.
Jasmine Hames Also Jasmine's first ever competition, came not far behind the other two in 4th, and these three performances assured us of Team First.
Tamsin Carter had to withdraw, as an earlier injury had not fully recovered
Grade 5 Under 13 F.
Sarah Hiesler Sarah turned in the same accomplished performances that she regularly does in training, and came 2nd as a consequence. Congratulations Sarah - hard work brings it's own reward.
Sophie Bown Sophie's first incursion at Grade 5, so rather apprehensive about the tougher set routine with 2 somersaults. Nevertheless settled to the task well, and got a result that she didn't expect - 3rd!
Grade 5 Under 11 F
Georgina Doig Georgina was desperate to achieve the standards we require to let her move to Grade 4. Coach Rebecca did a splendid job of keeping Georgie focused on the moves and the routines, not on the Judge's marking. Georgina sailed through the qualifying mark of 48.5 and nearly pulled off a trophy into the bargain. She has also qualified to Grade 4.
Davina Majeethia This was the big one for Davina, because she wanted to try her back somersault out in preparation to increasing the Vol further for October. She looked very hesitant, but it worked, and she was happy at 8th place.
Katherine Souto-Mills This was also Katherine's first incursion at Grade 5, so rather nervous about performing two routines each with somersault. However, she did it steady enough, came 9th and is now settled as a Grade 5 performer, and these three performances assured us of Team Second.
Their performances (including tariff) at the Competition are shown below.
All but Katherine Souto-Mills accomplished new Personal Bests (Katherine equaled hers).

April Spreadbury gave up Sunday morning in bed to come and support also. Good to see you April!!

London Youth Games 2003
A single class Team Competition, run over two rounds. Most London boroughs are represented.
First was Waltham Forest, 2nd Hillingdon, 3rd Enfield.
Medals are also awarded for the first three individuals Male and Female.
Jonathan Prazer was representing the London borough of Harrow. The Set routine could have attracted slightly higher marks, but it's not well rehearsed - being far different to Jonathan's Grade 1 Set. In his second round he had a move discounted as a repeat. It clearly was not a repeat, but with no video to support this, Jonathan had to accept the decision with good grace. He came 8th overall, and 2nd as Under 19 Male - and Harrow came team 7th.
His performances at the Competition are shown below.

British Championships 2003
Held at Solihull National Exhibition Centre.
An extraordinarily well organised competition in a fantastic venue. The opportunity to watch a truly fabulous spectacle of the best in British Trampolining.
Four competitors representing Ministry Of Air, twice as many as in 2002, reflecting our continued evolution into the top class arena.
Lauren Shipman [Under 18 F]. This was Lauren's first incursion to the British Championships, the first of many we hope!
We wait with bated breath, "How will she cope with the big occasion?" Her Set routine was fantastic, her best at Grade 1. Her planned Vol was intended to be a 9.0, however she made a sensible substitution, and came in at 8.8, a Tariff Personal Best, Two great performances. She came 23rd in her Age Group.
Kayleigh McCarthy [Over 18 F]. Kayleigh's second British Championships, and hoping to improve on last year's 28th place. However the Over 18F class is massive & includes 20 from the Elite Ladies class.
Kayleigh's Set routine was absolutely delightful, slightly short of a PB. Her Vol also went really well, again, one of her best. She came 20th in Great Britain - goal achieved!! Once again Kayleigh absolutely loved the experience - and is determined to do even better next year.
Emma Kingsnorth [Over 18 F]. This was Emma's third entry to the British Championships,
Her Set routine was one of her best this season. Emma was trying out a increased tariff with 2 double somersaults at the end, however the judges discounted one of her moves as a "repeat", consequently Emma lost 0.6 in tariff, otherwise the Vol looked really great and Emma finished 38th in a huge group of 55 entries. Great work and we were delighted with her performances.
Graham Williams [Over 18 M]. Graham's goal was to get a top ten placing - but recognised the strength in depth of this field this year
His set routine went well, nice lines and even height, and Graham was on track in tenth place after the Sets, Into the Vols, and trying out his new Vol of 13.0 difficulty, Graham had to stop the routine after the second move for reasons of personal safety.
Graham Williams [Elite Men]. Goal here was to improve on last year's placing, and try out his biggest ever tariff.
The Set went superbly and he nearly equaled his personal best for the Compulsory round. The second round took place on the Sunday, and we had high hopes for Graham. The packed hall watched Graham finish his planned 13.0 tariff, and 20 Ministry Of Air supporters let him hear how much they rated him!!
Graham came 12th in Great Britain, six places improved on last year. A career best performance, that also pre-qualified him for the Elite Men group next season.

Elite Men - Graham Williams

Over 18 M - Jonathan Prazer
Jonathan did two well controlled routines. We used the new style full this time in both routines and he proved himself more than able to handle it. Jonathan how now had a taste of what next season will feel like - we expect there is much more to come.
Over 18 F - Emma Kingsnorth & Kayleigh McCarthy
Emma had a day where all the different things we've been working on through the season happened at the same time. The results was easily enough to qualify Emma into the National Championships. And the funny thing was that is really was quite easy.
Once again Kayleigh showed the benefits of practice, practice then more practice. Following her string of Personal Bests at the last outing, she did it all over again here at Southend, Kayleigh achieved a Personal Best Set Score, a Personal Best 2 Round Score, and hit her goal for the 2003 Season by gaining the qualifying mark to compete in Elite Ladies.
Under 18 F - Lauren Shipman
Lauren's set was of very high standard (until the last three moves !). Lauren fancied more of a challenge so positioned herself 2cm from the end for the Half-Out (T) finish. Even with this added obstacle she obtained over the 24 marker. Her Voluntary round was strong and Lauren made a well timed substitution to ensure she completed all 10. Finished 13th, Her highest every Grade 1 placing
Under 15 F - Charlotte O'Shea
Charlie had an exciting day. The performance was not at her normal best and we had a few nervous wobbles. However that wasn't the fun part. She did seem determined to take home some of the metal work by breaking it off the end deck and tried at least three times.
Under 13 M - Chris Tilley & Adam Miller
Chris Tilley (or Tie-lee as the warm up marshals called him!) did the most entertaining Set of our day. He did four very good moves, one perfect straight jump, controlled stop ,and presented. Turns out he forgot what was next but he didn't let it effect his control. The Vol was much longer however and he proved he can remember 10 moves if he chooses.
Adam managed to get all the right rules at the same time in his Set and then repeated it all over again in the Vol. Adam had his best results of the season and achieved the mark to retain Grade 1 - precisely 52.00.
Well done to all of G1 competitors this season we are proud of you all. And most of all thanks for this years excellent entertainment. And remember if you guys have enjoyed this season half as much as we have, then we've enjoyed it twice as much as you. Ha-ha.

Elite Men - Graham Williams
Unfortunately Graham was suffering heavy chest congestion and had to withdraw.
Over 18 M - Jonathan Prazer
Jonathan has joined us from Queensmead, where he has had a very successful career. This was his first Grade 1 and was there to see how things look at the top level of the sport. He completed two routines (with an unplanned change in the Set) and showed he was adjusting well to the new environment.
.
Over 18 F - Emma Kingsnorth & Kayleigh McCarthy
Kayleigh turned in her best ever Set routine in a National Grade 1 event, then tried out her new Vol, and achieved her goal of a PB for her Tariff - this put her into 5th place, and whilst on a high she went on to do it again, but with even better form!! She was shocked and delighted to come 2nd in Great Britain. Without doubt Kayleigh's best ever Grade 1 Competition performance. Our warmest congratulations.
Emma - didn't quite get from her Set the things that she wanted to achieve so had to get quite focused for the Vol. This seemed to do the trick and Emma started the most positive, strong Vol. we have seen from her all season. Emma found out what it feels like to do moves with straight legs and full power and was unlucky not to finish. Unfortunately control was lost in the bs/s t due to the strongest rudi she has ever done giving her a bit of a surprise. All in all an excellent learning curve.
Under 18 F - Lauren Shipman
Lauren finished her set in her usual style and scored a PB form mark for her Grade 1 Set. She then went on to add two new double somersaults into her Vol, designed to increase the tariff to 8.4. Lauren didn't get the full tariff on this occasion tho due to a repeat B S/S (T) but still secured a tariff PB of 7.8
Under 15 F - Charlotte O'Shea
Charlie - used her new and improved Full Twisting B S/S. Charlie's Double B S/S looked more solid than ever before and next time out she assures us we will see the old Rudi - new and improved too.
Under 13 M - Chris Tilley
Our other new grade 1 was also there to see how things look at the top level of the sport. He completed two routines (although sometimes a bit wobbly) and showed he was also adjusting well to the new environment. Chris also improved his Personal Best Tariff.

Grade 2 Wales, Cardiff - Welsh Institute Of Sport.
Our second Grade 2 of the season. We were delighted to take all 3 competitors.
Under 13 M - Chris Tilley
Chris got the pleasant surprise that we'd anticipated last time out. Two good quality routines, and a personal best Tariff score, qualified him for Grade 1 (he'd previously gained the required "Validation" score). Chris moves straight into Grade 1 in three weeks time - he was simply passing through Grade 2.
Under 18 F - Julie Gooderick
Julie had a great competition, and improved her Grade 2 statistics with two steady routines. In a huge field of 52 competitors we were very pleased with the steady improvements that Julie always finds. Unusually she wobbled after landing both routines, and cost her about a mark in total. Keep up the good work Julie.
Under 15 F - Grace Kocks
Grace showed none of the nervousness so evident on her first Grade 2, and made a significant improvement on her first outing. Great work Grace, well done. Next we have to sort out her Straight Barani, as the Judges remain unconvinced of the shape!

Elite Men - Graham Williams
Second time into the Elite Men this year, and Graham was looking very sharp, he turned in a great Set, then followed this up with two well controlled Voluntary routines, each with deliberate changes. Graham finished 7th in Great Britain, and achieved his best ever three-round score at a National graded event
Over 18 F - Emma Kingsnorth & Kayleigh McCarthy
Kayleigh turned in her best ever Set routine in a National Grade 1 event, then went on to try our her new Vol, unfortunately failed to satisfy the Judges with the shape of her last move (Double-Back S/S Piked), so had to settle for a significantly reduced tariff.
Emma showed slight nerves, probably worry about her scores thus far, and the Set scores reflected this, but when she came out to compete the Vol she produced a blinder, and scored 8s practically across the board. With a score good enough to retain Grade 1 status for next year, Emma can now focus on her next goal.
Under 15 F - Charlotte O'Shea
Clearly not well, trying to recover from a bout of virus that lasted 2 weeks. Despite this Charlie got identical scores in both rounds to her last performance in Burgess Hill, and so once again she missed qualification for the Nationals by 0.1, however our conviction remains that this is not going to be a problem for Charlie for much longer.
Under 13 M - Adam Miller
Adam made another substantial improvement on his Set routine, however unusually sat down on the end-deck, cost 2.4 marks, and probably a bit dispirited by this, his second round routine lacked full sparkle. Next time Adam, we know you've got what's needed.

Grade 3-6 East, Brentwood, Courage Hall
Hosted by Brentwood T.C. - their first competition since reorganisation last year, and it promised to be a very busy day for them. Well done Brentwood, you coped well, and the day went very smoothly.
We entered 35 of our Grade 3-6s and were the most strongly represented Club. Specifically as 32 of these were Grade 5 and above. We welcomed Davina Majeethia, Sarah Hiesler, and Rebecca Lynch as first-timers for a Ministry Of Air outing to a Graded competition, and they acquitted themselves well, and settled into the friendly team environment that everyone enjoys so much.
6 Trophies, and 6 Team medalists

Elite Men - Graham Williams
First time into the Elite Men this year, and Graham was looking very sharp in Warm-ups, however when starting the Set routine, he miss-timed the take off and was disgusted with his first move, he failed to recognise how well the rest was going and stopped at move 8. Graham withdrew from the second round as he felt that there was little to achieve.
Over 18 F - Emma Kingsnorth & Kayleigh McCarthy
Emma hit nerves in the Set and did not complete it, but proved herself steady in the Vol. This makes only one miss out of the last seven competition attempts, showing great consistency with her new routine.
Kayleigh came to the competition to support, but withdrew herself.
Under 18 F - Lauren Shipman
Lauren did not have her best day but as always she completed her Set and further consolidated her 7.7 Vol (planned as her Elite Ladies Set) without a problem, Lauren looks more than ready to up the tariff for the next comp. She finished 18th in a very strong field.
Under 15 F - Charlotte O'Shea
Charlie did a strong Set and her Vol without the push-in mat on the side. She missed qualifying by 0.1 due to the form on the last part of the Vol. but these marks will come easily as the Rudi becomes more relaxed (remember you are not a salmon). and gained the required score to continue at Grade 1 in 2004
Under 13 M - Adam Miller
Adam made a substantial improvement on his first Grade 1 Set routine, and coupled with his second performance at his new Voluntary, improved his score to 50.0, and also finished 18th. He has a little way to go to gain the Grade 1 retaining mark, but has the majority of the season in front of him.

15th Flower Cup - Aalsmeer NL - March 2003
We were delighted to attend this ever popular competition again. This time we took four members, and for three this was their first competition abroad.
Class II Female All ages - F.I.G. B - max tariff 8.0
In the morning we had Kayleigh McCarthy, Emma Kingsnorth and Charlie O'Shea. Each had very successful competitions.
Kayleigh finished 14th, only one mark away from qualifying for the finals after two typically steady routines. Emma completed her Set routine for the fifth successive time, and is now ready for an increase in her voluntary tariff, she came 18th. Charlie introduced a double-back somersault into her Voluntary and raised her Tariff PB to 6.9, and finished 19th with the same score as Emma.
Class I Male 16+ years - F.I.G. A - unlimited tariff
Graham was competing in a tremendous field of top class Internationals, and after a really nice Set routine was lying 39th. For the second round he planned to try out a new Voluntary, aiming for a Tariff PB, however he lost focus and decided to terminate the routine after three moves.

BUSA National Championships
Hosted this year by Brunel University in conjunction with Nova Ealing Trampoline Club
Our most recent Grade 1 Emma Kingsnorth was entered in the Elite Ladies section. This was a wonderful opportunity for Emma to try her F.I.G. B Set routine as practice for the forthcoming Flower Cup in Holland.
The routine went far better than Emma expected, and in the second round she repeated it with even more confidence, as a result Emma entered the Finals, and improved her position to 8th. Emma achieved her lifetime highest score over 3 rounds. What a confidence boost for the Open International next week!
.
Here we also saw ex-Ministry Member Sarah Shillabeer entered in the Intermediate Ladies class, turn in 3 solid routines although rather lacking height.

Grade 1 Yorkshire, Sheffield, Hilsborough L.C.
The first Grade 1 of the season at Sheffield. The competition was marked by two fantastic routines from Claire Wright in the Elite Ladies, she increased her GB Tariff record to 14.4!
We were delighted to take 6 competitors, also a record for Ministry Of Air.
Over 18 M - Graham Williams
His set routine was good in places, but not enough to impress the Judges. Then came his Vol, & despite a changed move and a repeated move Graham shot into 2nd place, qualifying for the Nationals and to join the Elite Men group at the next outing, and a win looked on the cards. However when it came to the Finals Graham produced 5 moves and amazed the Judges by stopping. Unknown to them he had slipped in two changed moves, and realised that to complete a routine would have taken him into move combinations that were far from familiar, and decided that stopping was the wisest course of action.
Over 18 F - Emma Kingsnorth,& Kayleigh McCarthy
Emma has taken on a new Set and Vol for this season, and although apprehensive, did a very creditable job, amazingly she sat down on the Side-pad after the last move, which coincidentally is one of her soundest moves. In the second round she fluffed the routine mid-way through, but we are all very confident that Emma is going to turn this routine into something special as we go through the season
Kayleigh produced a very sound couple of routines, and gained qualification to the Nationals and also achieved a personal best at Grade 1. This was a pleasing start to the season, and opens up the door for exploring various planned improvements to her Set and Vol over the next few months.
Under 18 F - Lauren Shipman
Lauren was looking forward to trying out her Vol. that had finally fallen into place at the Dave Ward Cup a couple of months back. She did a delightful Set routine, and the Vol went really well. Lauren achieved a personal best at Grade 1 and was just 0.3 short of the qualifying mark for Elite Ladies.
Under 15 F - Charlotte O'Shea
First time at Grade 1, Charlie was unfortunately nursing considerable discomfort in her neck, from an bizarre injury in her shower! She struggled through the Set routine, but then we had to withdraw her before the second round, rather than risk delaying the period of recovery.
Under 13 M - Adam Miller
Also first time at Grade 1, Adam moved into the unknown, and it showed slightly, however he held himself together and completed both routines. It will definitely get better from here, also congratulations to Adam for achieving a Personal Best tariff of 4.5.

Grade 2 South Shields, Temple Park L.C.
The first Grade 2 of the season at Temple Park L.C.. We were delighted to take 3 competitors, all first-timers at this Grade.
Under 18 F - Julie Gooderick
Julie settled into the atmosphere well, and did a confident set, although nowhere near her best. Then the second routine got a bit out of control, but she managed to finish it well.
Under 15 F - Grace Kocks
Grace certainly looked nervous, and this was reflected in both performances, but with the first competition out of the way will settle to the tasks in the months ahead.
Under 13 M - Chris Tilley
Chris started his routine looking really good, and was lying 2nd after the Sets, however the new Vol clearly needs some polishing, Chis dropped to 6th place, and despite a considerable improvement in the Final couldn't improve on the position. We are confident that the next time out will bring a pleasant surprise.

Grade 3 - 4 East, Grundy Park L.C. Cheshunt
This competition was hosted at Grundy Park Cheshunt, by Phoenix Flyers, and came just 9 days after the Xmas break. We were affected as were other Clubs by the very early start to the competitive season, and managed only 2 1sts, 4 2nds, a third place, and only two members moved up a grade.

Congratulations therefore to Alex Tilley 1st Grade 4 U 15 M, Helen Mann 1st Grade 4 O 15 F, also Chris Tilley, Helen Bangs, Jacqui Tilley, Charlotte Wilkinson, Alex Lee, & Sara Kocks.
Also well done to our Grade 4 Under 15 F, for 2nd place Team.
Good performances by Charlotte & Lisa Cunningham, and we must also extend our sympathy to Emma Message and Christine O'Brien, neither fully recovered from injury, on the day gave it their best shot.
