Ministry Of Air Club Championships
Saturday 14th December 2002 - held at Aldenham School Sports Centre with a supper to follow at a local school with live music by Mendoza.
The competition was run in accordance with the National Graded Structure, Grade 1 to Grade 6, with virtually the full Club attending.
Overall winner (highest score over two rounds), & thus Club Champion was Lauren Shipman, in second place Kayleigh McCarthy, and third was Charlotte O'Shea.
Club performances at the Competition are shown below.

Many thanks are due to all our helpers, with them we wouldn't have had a competition: "Official" helpers were
Judges: Kayleigh McCarthy, Richard Fenton, Terry Williams, Sue Wilson and Sue & Amanda Jay, flown in from Flight T.C. - Harlow, Tariff Alex Deller, Lauren Shipman, Charlotte O'Shea
Recorders: Sharon French, Sarah Villarreal, Carolyn Fenton.
Marshalls: Trevor Wilkinson, Jenny Doig, Claire Kocks.
And of course a huge thank-you to Catering and Party Organiser Maggie O'Shea.
Grade 2 National Championships - Walton-On-Thames
Adam Miller [Under 13 M]. Perhaps slightly overawed by the occasion, Adam's first two routines were a little below his best, but good enough to get into the finals. Here he picked up the pace, and put in his best performance, and finished 8th as consequence.
Charlotte O'Shea [Under 13 F]. Unusually Charlie was forced to stop her first routine very early as she'd slipped to the side and realised the danger of coming off. Despite the experience she put together a decent second round and finished 36th.

Colchester Open - Invitational Competition
Hosted by Hi-Tension Trampoline Club at Colchester Leisure World. We entered our top Grade 1 - 2s, and some from the lower level to gain experience.
We came away with eight individual trophies from eleven competitors, how lucky is that?!
The secret is that these trampolinists work very hard to be this lucky.
Three firsts, Graham Williams, Adam Miller and Charlotte Wilkinson
Three seconds, Lauren Shipman, Claire Horncastle and Katie Fenton
Two thirds, Emily Wilkinson and Kaylee Miller.
Also 8 of the team broke 17 of their individual Personal Best performances.
Possibly unluckiest of all was Charlie O'Shea, who started her compulsory routine with a perfect Back Somersault (literally scored 0.0 form deduction from all 5 judges), then stopped as she couldn't remember the 2nd move. Charlie went on to complete the second and third rounds and achieved two consecutive personal bests.
Unfortunately also Kayleigh McCarthy & Emma Message had to withdraw, else the medal table would have surely been even more remarkable.

Dave Ward Hunt Cup - International Competition - November
An Open International Invitational in memory of Dave Ward Hunt, a respected figure in Trampolining in Great Britain, deceased in 2000. This year the competition was extended to include Synchronised Trampolining, DMT and Tumbling.
Individual Trampoline Senior Class - 4 Ministry Of Air trampolinists
Graham Williams came 7th in the Senior Male against seriously seasoned International campaigners - including the National Squad from Spain, also Mark Alexander & Gary Smith from the GBR National Squad. Graham was lying in 8th place after two qualifying rounds, then improved one place through a steady performance in the final,
Kayleigh McCarthy, performing in her first International event - just loved it (as always). Her set routine was off of her best, but the confidence grew with her established Voluntary routine, came 5th in the Senior Female,
Lauren Shipman, delightful set scoring 25.0, and using her planned 2003 World A compulsory routine as her Vol came 6th in the Junior Female (with a new tariff record of 7.7), a tremendous boost to her confidence.
Charlie O'Shea also performing in her first International event in the same group as Lauren, gained great experience with a new personal tariff record of 5.7, and came 18th out of a field of 51 international competitors, beating opposition from Sweden, Portugal and Belgium.

National Graded Competition - Grade 2 Derby
Emma Message [Over 18 F].Unfortunately Emma had to withdraw through minor injury.
Adam Miller [Under 13 M]. Two excellent routines put Adam into the lead going into the Finals and gained him the qualifying score to go to Grade 1 next year. This performance was also a Personal Best for Adam. He went on to complete the final round well, but not quite at the same standard. He finished 3rd in Great Britain, and set our minds on new goals...,
Charlotte O'Shea [Under 13 F]. Two excellent routines also put Charlotte into the lead going into the Finals. She was trying out a new Voluntary, with a 5.7 Tariff (although the competition has a cap of 5.5). We were delighted with it. and gives Charlie two new Personal Bests. Charlotte went on to complete the final round well below her own high standards and had to settle for 5th place.

Grade 3 - 6 National Grading Competition, Ipswich - Northgate L.C.
Twenty-four Grade 3 - 5s ventured out on a dark Sunday morning heading for Ipswich.
After a slightly nervous start, once again we settled into the best game of all. Succeeding like no other Club can!
As a summary, eight individual trophies. nine qualified to move up a grade, nineteen improved their personal best performances.
It's always hard to single out one performance amongst so many successful competitors. However - if there were only two that had to be mentioned....
Julie Gooderick for her personal best scores, for 3rd place in a tough group, for qualifying to Grade 2, and for the total commitment she has put into achieving her goals over the last 18 months.
Rosie Spreadbury for 2nd place, for qualifying from Grade 4 to Grade 3 at her first outing, for her personal best scores, and for sheer commitment to get it right!
Hard luck prize goes to Chris Tilley, easily the best in his group, he was so committed to perfect form and stability, but at the end stupidly put hands down rather than take one small step. Cost him first place - but what really matters to Chris - delayed his introduction to Grade 2 by three months.
Take it on the chin Chris - You will kick butt! when you get to Grade 2 in February after the January Grade 3.
Competitions Diary
We picked up 3 first places Alexander Lee, Alex Tilley, Matthew Govier, 3 seconds Rosie Spreadbury, Helen Mann, Chris Tilley, and 2 thirds Julie Gooderick & Alex Deller.
.
The goal for several was to try to gain Qualifying scores for the next Grade.
So congratulations to Helen Mann, April Spreadbury, Alexander Lee - all promoted to Grade 4.
Alex Deller, Matthew Govier, Stephen Jeffery, Rosie Spreadbury - all promoted to Grade 3.
Julie Gooderick, Grace Kocks - both qualified to move to Grade 2.

Grade 5 - 6 Internal Grading Competition
Held at Bricket Wood Sports Centre. This was our first Ministry Of Air Competition, aimed to give genuine competition experience to the lower Grades and newest members, also to determine the readiness of some of these members to move up a grade,
Many pleasant routines, with delightful surprises coming from all quarters.- particularly Sam Chung's first round routine, and Katie Fenton's Voluntary routine
Inevitably one or two spills let down a few that we had high hopes for - bad luck to Helen Mann, Rebecca Tilly & Rosie Spreadbury - it's called character building, but that's no consolation when you've trained as hard as you have.
And hard luck to Katherine Suoto-Mills for her delightful first round routine, which unfortunately was the wrong routine.
Winners in their classes were Jacqui Tilley (left), April Spreadbury (right), Anna Villarreal, Katie Fenton, Georgina Doig, Shona Tully & Ailis Tully.
Congratulations to Jacqui Tilley, promoted to Grade 4 for her performances on the day, also after close analysis, we are offering provisional promotion to Anna Villarreal, Charlotte Wilkinson & Rosie Spreadbury - because of their good performances using Grade 4 Sets as their second round routines.

British Championships 2002
Held at Solihull National Exhibition Centre.
An extraordinarily well organised competition in a fantastic venue. The opportunity to watch a truly fabulous spectacle of the best in British Trampolining.
Two competitors representing Ministry Of Air
Kayleigh McCarthy [Under 18 F]. This was Kayleigh's first incursion to the British Championships, the first of many we hope!
A car breakdown prevented Kayleigh attending the pre-competition training in the N.E.C.
So on the first Competition day she got on to warm-up, and discovered a row of intense media spotlights in her line of sight, and the hugeness of the hall reduced the visual landmarks that she might normally expect. However, she reasoned that it was the same for everyone else, and got on with the warm-ups
We wait with bated breath, "How will she cope with the big occasion?" Her Set routine went well, although a bit off her best. Her Vol went really well, one of her best. We were totally delighted with her ability to cope with the great pressure of performing on the National stage. She came 28th in Great Britain. Kayleigh absolutely loved the experience - and is determined to do better next year.
Graham Williams [Over 18 M]. Graham's goal was to get a top ten placing - but recognised the strength in depth of this field this year
His set routine went well, nice lines and even height, until he mistimed the take off for the Full - spoilt this move, and the next one, before he recovered properly. Came in with much lower marks than his norm. Graham tried to recover the competition on his Vol, which went reasonably well with a 12.1 tariff (a PB tariff for his Grade 1s), but the gap to close on the top ten was that bit too much, and he finished 13th, one place improved on last year.
Graham Williams [Elite Men]. Goal here was to improve on last year's placing, and try out his biggest ever tariff.
The Set went superbly and he nearly equaled his personal best for the Compulsory round. The second round took place on the Sunday, and we had high hopes for Graham. The packed hall watched Graham finish his planned 13.0 tariff, but lose control at the finish and rebound backwards slightly to just land on the end platform. Sadly the last move (a double back somersault with double twist) wasn't in the required Straight position, and counted as a repeat of an earlier move, his tariff was recorded as 11.4 as a consequence.
Graham came 18th in Great Britain, again one place improved on last year.

As a new Club just ending it's second full year we were delighted to have "doubled" our representation to the British Championships - we missed Lauren Shipman, and confidently expect she will be there next year. Our goal is to "double" our numbers again at the 2003 British Championships.
Judge representative was Terry Williams, Club Coaches for the day were Paul Callender & Alex Deller. Denis McCarthy and Tom, Maggie & Charlie O'Shea were there to support and cheer as loud as any.

Grade 2 National Grading Competition
Held at Southend Leisure & Tennis Centre.
We were introducing Charlotte O'Shea and Adam Miller to their first Grade 2s having qualified just 3 weeks earlier. They joined Emma Message at this Grade, but Sarah Shillabeer decided not to share her 'Flu with us, an stayed home in bed.
Adam Miller [Under 13 M]. This was Adam's first incursion to a Grade 2, and he had rarely experienced being in groups larger than three people - let alone 20+. Typical of Adam, none of this seemed to make any difference, and he rose to the occasion in his inimitable way. Two straightforward good routines put him into the Finals, and gained him the qualifying score for the Grade 2 Nationals. He went on to complete the final round and finished 8th.
Emma Message [Over 18 F]. The set routine went well, nice lines and even height, but then came the Rudi on move 10, Still not yet proficient with this move, Emma couldn't quite complete it and got marked out of 9 moves. Into the Vol. she made a real good start with probably her favourite move [1 & 3/4 Front S/S (T)], and improved her total score from the last venture at Huddersfield. Overall position was 37th in a huge field of over 50 experienced trampolinists.
Charlotte O'Shea [Under 13 F]. Also trying to achieve 2 round scores to qualify for the National Championships at her very first Grade 2, in another huge field of 50+ entrants. Charlie got off to a lower performance to what we are accustomed to. But then settled herself after she realised the goal was now fairly comfortably in reach. So then she slammed down a wonderful Vol, than must have scared half the girls to death, and pulled her up to third place - and qualified her for Grade 1 next year! In the third round we could see that the nerves are jangling for all the top five girls, only question was who could hold it together the best. Charlie was clearly as nervous as the rest, but managed to gain another place even with a routine well below her best. She finished 2nd in Great Britain, and set our minds on new goals...

Paul Miller stayed the whole day to capture all the performances on video for us - and we are all very grateful for this.

Grade 1 National Grading Competition
The final qualifying Grade 1 of the year, venue - Littledown Leisure Centre, Bournemouth.
Graham Williams [Elite Men]. Once again Graham turned in a now familiar steady first round with satisfactory score of 25.9 - and then attempted a 13.0 tariff routine as a test for the National Championships. He lost some momentum midway through and made 3 move replacements (including a repeated move) to recover the routine. Subsequent tariff was 10.4 difficulty, and suffered a bit on form.
Kayleigh McCarthy [Under 18 F]. Kayleigh didn't hit her best Set score, and her second round was about her average performance - Nevertheless, we were all delighted to discover that for her first time ever, she slipped into the Final 10 placings at 10th. She took this opportunity to try out a slight modification to her Voluntary routine, it suffered terribly on form, but Kayleigh was delighted to record her highest ever tariff in competition at 8.4 - and moved up a place to finish 9th in Great Britain.
Lauren Shipman [Under 18 F]. Trying to achieve 2 round scores to qualify for the National Championships.
Amazingly Lauren's routines still fail to satisfy the Judges, and came in just below the Qualifying Mark. Although disappointed that she didn't achieve her aim of qualifying for the National Championships this year, Lauren should be very pleased to finish 18th in Great Britain, and will be back fighting next year.

Grade 1 National Grading Competition
The fifth Grade 1 of the year, venue - Armitage Centre, Manchester.
Graham Williams [Elite Men]. Goal for the day was to qualify for British Championships in this category.
Graham turned in a now familiar steady first round with satisfactory score of 25.8 - arithmetic suggested that he'd be safer to use a fairly high tariff 2nd round routine to achieve the goal, so went for a 12.1 tariff routine. He lost some momentum midway through and made an amazing 5 move replacements to recover the routine. Subsequent tariff was 10.9 difficulty, and suffered a bit on form but more than adequate for his goal - needing 59.0. He achieved 60.1 score that takes him to the National Championships in July in the Elite Men category, as well as his age group. Good job well executed.
Lauren Shipman [Under 18 F]. Trying to achieve 2 round scores to qualify for the National Championships.
Lauren's set suffered slightly and was below her normal standard that she produces in training. Then came the Voluntary - once again Lauren raised her tariff to a new high and recovered her form significantly. Although disappointed that she didn't achieve her aim of qualifying scores, Lauren should be very pleased to finish 16th in Great Britain, her best ever placing and used her highest tariff of 7.1.

Our old friend Jason Holland [Apex Gym Club] travelled with our three, and also did very well. Jason finished 17th in the Elite Men, and also qualified for National Championships in this category.
Paul, Jason, Graham and Lauren managed to take 8 hours to come home - thanks to Graham's car having the misfortune to self destruct various major engine pieces, and was dragged the last 50 miles by the A.A.

Grade 2 National Grading Competition
First Grade 2 outing for our 2 Over 18 Females this year - Huddersfield Sports Centre. This offered the opportunity to see how their routines stand the scrutiny of Grade 2 Judges in a slightly diminished field of 35 entrants.
First to go on was Sarah Shillabeer. Although very nervous, pulled out two very steady routines (& her highest ever tariff), and we were satisfied with a two round total of 51.5. Short of the Retaining mark, but close enough to show we have only to practice and polish to get significant improvement next time at Southend.
Then came Emma Message. The important test for Emma was the Rudi, only recently added to her Set as a compulsory element. Her set routine went well, except she was unable to stand securely after the Rudi, and lost a whole move as a consequence. Undeterred, and determined to satisfy herself that the Rudi could be accomplished, Emma used it again in the second round (also her highest ever tariff), and it was as solid as a rock. (Next time then Emma)

Grade 1 National Grading Competition
The forth Grade 1 of the year, venue - Welsh Institute Of Sport, Cardiff. Combined two day weekend of Individual and Synchronised Trampolining and Double-Mini Trampoline. The first day was Grade 1 Individual Trampoline.
Graham Williams entered Over 18 M by mistake, instead of Elite Men. Determined to make the best out of this he planned to try out a revised Voluntary routine. Graham put in a nice first round - & went into joint first place. In the second round he tried out his newest Voluntary but slipped in the middle and had to bring it to an early finish. (Unlucky son!)
Then came Kayleigh McCarthy & Lauren Shipman [Under 18 F] in a huge field of 47 competitors, nerves are jangling a little for Lauren, who has the goal in this competition to obtain the marks required to stay at Grade 1.
Kayleigh turned in a steady Set routine, but lost the way a little on her Vol, too much travel and she made a quick revision to the moves, resulting in a slightly lower tariff, but able to finish the routine. A little disappointed but not a bad result.
Lauren's set went ok, but still a bit short of the standard that she produces in training. Then came the Voluntary, Lauren raised her tariff a little but without significantly compromising her form. But what's happened! her tariff has been reduced by 0.7 from the planned routine - the Judges had classed one of her moves as a repeat. Paul's mental arithmetic told him that this decision was crucial to Lauren's possible qualification marks. Out came the video and over to Terry for expert appraisal of the routine components - his decision, the routine was good - put in a £20 protest. With only minutes to spare, Paul raced with the written protest, the fee and the video to the Chair of Judges, then we had to sit on our hands for a few minutes that felt like hours. Our video evidence was crucial to the outcome - inexplicably the Tariff Judge's video camera hadn't been running!,
Up came the marks and we all dived for the calculators to check and recheck - Yes !! 54.0. Lauren's place at Grade 1 is secured to the end of 2003.

British Colleges - National Championships
A spectacular Multi Sport three day event hosted at the University Of Wales, Swansea
Hannah Barker & Kayleigh McCarthy were representing their respective Colleges as Individual Qualifiers and were also selected for the East Regional Team.
After a blinding Set routine and a quality second round routine Kayleigh gained bronze medal - Individual third in Great Britain, and her performances were instrumental to the successful Regional Team Bronze place.
Hannah was unlucky, she started the Set routine better than we've ever seen her do it, then crashed on move eight, however she picked herself up with true Team Spirit and put in a very solid performance that contributed to the Regional Team securing third place.

We had three days with spectacular opening ceremony, two party nights, tribute bands, discos (totally alcohol free - yeah, right!!), stunning competitions and formal closing ceremonies.
As an unexpected bonus, Kayleigh & Terry were invited to officiate at the Ladies Volleyball National Championships - knowing nothing about the sport, they had a quick training session, then sat down on the best seats in the house to score the events.
Grade 3 - 4 National Grading Competition
Hosted at Grundy Park, Cheshunt, home of Phoenix Flyers. Great venue, and promised to be an exciting day out.
Turned into one of those magical days - we'd taken 14 of our strong Grade 4 and Grade 3 squad, and on the day they ruled!!
Nowhere more so than in the Grade 4 Under 18 F class, always a fiercely fought group with 20 competitors - we took the first five places !! Here Christine O'Brien was in the lead after the first and the second round, but just pipped by three others from Ministry Of Air, all throwing everything that they could into the contest.
Unluckiest of the day was Charlie O'Shea, by far our strongest Grade 3, there to do one job only - qualify for Grade 2. She turned in a blinding set routine scoring a personal best 26.2, needing only to complete about 9 moves in reasonable fashion to qualify - she crashed on move 8! - how unlucky is that? - with true competitor spirit, she picked her self up, and went on to show in the Finals just how good she really is, and climbed back to 5th place.
The medal table turned out like this.
Four Gold, Alex Deller, Matthew Govier, Lisa Cunningham, Adam Miller
Silver for Charlotte Cunningham
Four Bronze Hannah Barker, Molly Pallett, Emma Nicholson, Chris Tilley
6 Team Medals all from our Under 18 F - 1st Place for Christine O'Brien. Lisa & Charlotte Cunningham - 2nd place for Molly Pallett, Julie Gooderick & Joanne Nethersole.

St. Crispins Invitational Competition - Wokingham
Traditionally one of the friendliest competitions that we go to, and ideal for the initiation into the competitive scene.
We also take along a few of the senior squad, that want to try out new routines for the season ahead.
Medals? - well around 12, but that's exactly as we expected.
First for Lauren Shipman, with flawless form in the set followed by a significant tariff vol, left the others struggling.
Graham Williams caused great amusement by crashing out a simple front somersault in the first round. He had an enormous tariff routine to come and astonished the less experienced spectators with a routine containing 10 double somersaults. However, managed to trash this one also in the Finals round, [and still finished second].
At the other end of the spectrum we were delighted to see Georgina Doig in her second competition hold a really steady routine together very neatly, and come second in her slightly younger group - watch this girl in years to come.
We had team 1st medals for Georgina Doig, George Irving & Ailis Tully [U11 Group 2], team 2nd for Katie Fenton, Stephen Jeffery, Charlotte Wilkinson, [U11 Group 1], and team 3rd for Cassandra French, April Spreadbury & Emily Wilkinson [U16 Group 2].
We also had Five 1st Round Personal Bests and Four Personal Bests over 2 rounds - with the most outstanding improvements coming from Charlotte Wilkinson.
Everyone else did pleasantly enough and thoroughly enjoyed the experience - which was the point. Best newcomers to Ministry Of Air were April Spreadbury & Cassandra French, another two to watch closely.

Grade 1 National Grading Competition
The second Grade 1 of the year, venue - Crystal Leisure Centre in Stourbidge. This promised to be a fabulous opportunity to see Graham Williams and Kayleigh McCarthy to try out their new Voluntary routines.
First to go on was Graham Williams [Elite Men]. The competition was very stiff, practically all were past British Age Group Champions. Graham put in a very steady first round score - & went into 9rd place. In the second round he tried out his newest Voluntary but slipped on the last move and picked up 3.0 penalty marks for an extra move. In round three he tried it again, and succeeded - 12.1 tariff. Moved him up to 8th place..
Then came Kayleigh McCarthy [Under 18 F] in a huge field of 45 entrants.
She comfortably settled into a revised Set routine and scored well, and now with confidence in place she moved on to try her latest Voluntary - 8.2 Tariff!! This new routine also went well and she moved up to an encouraging 18th place.
Best was to come when we realised she'd qualified for the British Championships in July.. [Kayleigh spent next 3 days in shock !!]. Get your ticket orders in soon, that's two we have that are qualified for the Nationals.

Grade 1 National Grading Competition
The first Grade 1 of the year, venue - Alton Sports Centre in Hampshire. This promised to be a fabulous opportunity to see Graham Williams try out his new Voluntary routine, and the first Grade 1 for Lauren Shipman and Kayleigh McCarthy.
First to go on was Graham Williams [O18M]. The competition was very stiff, including past British Age Group Champions.
Graham put in a very steady first round score - & went into 3rd place. In the second round he showed some of the result of 6 months hard work through the winter with a routine of 11.3 difficulty. He made it look easy - and improved his personal best score over 2 rounds. In round three he had to make a couple of minor adjustments, however still finished 3rd in Great Britain. Good result Graham!, and at the next event he will compete in the Elite Men event.
In this same competition Graham's training partner Jason Holland - Apex [Reading] also scored well, coming 4th. His first round routine was a bit scrappy by his high standards, but nevertheless a reasonable start to the season and goals in place now for the next event.
Then came our two Under 18 Females, first Grade 1 outing for Lauren Shipman and Kayleigh McCarthy in a huge field of over 50 entrants.
Neither wanted to show nerves and each looked really good for this induction into the Grade 1 Open circuit. Individual routines were a little short of their best, but total respect due to these two, scoring just under the minimum required to retain Grade 1 status, good to see each trying out their highest tariff Voluntary routines and their overall performances were a credit to them.
The first one is over now, and next time out we'll see what our best Ladies can do once the nerves are settled - for now we'll settle for being proud of them.
