Divisional Schools - [East]

Several Ministry Of Air members were representing their Schools at this event at Chelmsford, Essex. Everyone does the same Set routine, then a Voluntary Routine with a tariff limit of 3.0 in the Closed section, or 7.0 in the Open.

U19 Open
Kayleigh McCarthy and Christine O'Brien each produced great routines, and Kayleigh tried out a 7.0 Tariff in partial preparation for next year Grade 1. However the Open section is always at a very high standard, aimed at Grade 1 - 4 competitors, and our two failed to get through to the next round, but should be very satisfied with their performances. (Each turned in a Personal Best for the Set routine, but our Club rules preclude these results counting for Grade 4 and above as the Set is slightly too easy.)

U19 Closed
Here we saw Katharine Arnold and Gemma Healey, [and ex-Ministry member Amy Norris] all turn in solid routines, We'd hoped to see Katharine try out her Back Somersault routine, but she kept it simple, and settled for a safe 5th place. Gemma turned in a personal best for two rounds, and came 19th in a very big field.

U15 Closed
This was a huge group of 71 Competitors, and Ministry Of Air had 3 of these. Alison Rand produced flawless form, and won by nearly a whole mark. Charlotte Cunningham came a very satisfying 3rd, just marginally ahead of Lisa. Lisa Cunningham also produced personal best performances, and came 6th, a really pleasing result. [St. Clement Danes School failed to capitalise on the training our twins are turning in, and didn't select Charlotte for their team. This oversight cost the School a Team place into the Zonal round!]
And we met here Joanne Nethersole - who asked to jion our Club on the spot!!!

Our thanks to Paul Callender (Nova - Ealing) for support at this competition, and to Kayleigh - who found that she really likes Judging, and judged the U13 and U15 Open sections.

British Colleges - [East]

A really friendly low key competition, aimed at 6th Form Colleges. Primarily a Team event, but with places available for top placed individuals to go to the BCS Championships in Swansea in April 2002. The event is a multi-sport one, we had two females in the Trampolining section, competing at Benfleet in Essex.

From Luton College Hannah Barker performed two solid routines, to get 2nd place, and Kayleigh McCarthy representing West Herts College came first.

They join the winning team from Seevic College, and two other top placed females to represent East Division at the National Championships in Swansea next year.

Gr2 Nats Gr2 NatsGrade 2 National Championships 2001

The premier competitions for Grade 2 competitors, hosted at Kingston-Upon Hull, this promised to be a fabulous opportunity to see the best in Great Britain at Grade 2. Ministry Of Air were fortunate to have 2 competitors there. The format was to have 2 rounds of competition in the morning and early afternoon. Then spotlight the top 10 in each age group for a fabulous spectacle of trampolining of all age groups in the late afternoon

Under 15 F
Lauren Shipman First to compete. Lauren started with a really excellent Set routine - what a time to hit a Personal Best (PB1) with 25.5 !!!, kept her in the lead for most of the morning. Then came her Voluntary, still slightly apprehensive of the ending, she put all worries behind her (and us) and scored 23.8 Form, thus coupled with the 6.1 tariff set up yet another Personal Best over 2 rounds of 55.0. Now we could only sit on our hands for 2 more hours to see how many of the other 40 competitors could manage to beat her score and send her out of the top ten finalists placings.

Under 18 F
Kayleigh McCarthy On panel Two, Kayleigh also produced stunning Set and Vol routines perhaps with a bit too much travel, and slightly 'wonky' Rudis. Her panel were marking slightly less favourably, she scored 54.1 over 2 rounds, well short of her best, and surely not up to the level required to enter the finalists arena. 'Never mind Dad. I did my best, and I'm still going to Grade 1 next year....'.
10 minutes later Terry is frantically phoning Kayleigh's Dad - Come back Denis, we've got TWO finalists !!'

The Finals
The hall quietens down, and our top two females March In and are presented along with the best in Great Britain Grade 2s. A couple of warm-ups for each competitor and we are ready to start. Each competitor is announced separately and performs in front of a totally quiet hall. How scarey is that!!!
Our two handled that pressure like the top class performers that they are. Lauren and Kayleigh each performed excellent routines, great cheers from the informative crowd, and coincidentally each finished 9th in their Age Groups.
Well done both, all at Ministry Of Air are truly proud of you.... Now lets party!!!
Thanks for all the great first line support from Christine O'Brien, and of course Denis McCarthy, Ian & Angie Shipman.

team ...And party we did. Back to the hotel, quick changes and we hit the fun spots of Hull. Crazy games in the Megabowl Leisure complex, A really silly meal in TGI Fridays with Nova club mates (Paul Callender got totally covered in Lipstick - Lauren paraded around the restaurant with Spoons (yes - big Spoons) stuck all over ther face - and Terry had to join in singing Happy Birthday to himself standing on a chair [ It wasn't his birthday]). Then Bowling till midnight, then Clubbing till 3 a.m. (but only for some of course).

Colchester Open Competition, 18th Nov 2001

Classic Open Competition hosted by Hi-Tension T.C. at Colchester Essex. We went there last year and came away with 2 medals, how would we get on this time?

We had 21 competitors, (Anna Threlfall missing on a Lacrosse pitch somewhere in deepest Hertfordshire). What proved to be a very long day kicked off with our four new Under 9 Grade 6's. They all did well each only at their second competition, and competed both routines without a hitch. We welcomed our first-timer Kerryline Gillian, 'Kez' kicked off her competition career with a respectable 44.0 score over 2 rounds. Varying degrees of success from most others but a very few inexplicable slips, [one probably cost Heather Phillips a medal - she went on to record her best-ever 2nd round].
Once again the 'Terry' rule of 8.0 shows if you want a medal, you've got to hit 8.0 (i.e. 24.0 Form scores) in your Set & Vol. The route to this is "do it again and again in training, week in - week out".

The Medalists
Claire Horncastle showed yet again that she's too good for Grade 6 with a very comfortable win - we've only been waiting for the Back S/S to consolidate. In January she moves up to Grade 5.
Matthew Goview pulled off a cheeky win in the mixed Grade 5 U18, denying Molly Pallet the victory that's going to be hers very soon. Nice performances from both of them.
And also in Grade 5 Adam Miller found an unexpected win, and will be all set now to move to Grade 4 in January 2002 Graded competition. Our Under 9 Grade 4 Female Sara Kocks continues to progress steadily, and came in a very solid second place, at only her second outing with this difficult routine.
Charlie O'Shea bought the house down with her Set routine. 8.9 from highest Judge! Made Set & vol look truly polished. Without doubt we saw Grade 3 performances from a Grade 4 competitor who trains 6 hours a week as a minimum.
At the other end of tha hall in the Grade 2s Kayleigh McCarthy (and many others) were in the competition as a rehersal for the Grade 2 National Championships next week. Her goal was to achieve good marks with Set & Vol. - she hit 2 Personal Bests (PB1 & PB2) ! and stormed away with the victory.
Kayleigh also recorded the top Set Routine Form marks of the competition - All Grades - All Ages - All Sexes - All day. plus attained the second highest overall Scores (topped only by Matthew Aspinall - Hi-Tension - Grade 1, helped by a 10.2 Tariff!).

Speaking Of Personal Bests
8 of the 21 improved their Personal Bests from the first Round (PB1), and 10 improved their 2 round scores (PB2). Clear demonstration that practice brings it's own rewards, and even if we can't all win - we can always attack and improve our individual performance goals. Well done to Emma Nicholson, Helen Bangs, Kaylee Miller, Kaylie Willson & Nicola Wilson.

Thanks for all the great first line support from Team Manager - Christine O'Brien, Judges Hannah Barker & Paul Callender (Nova), Competition Marshalls Sharon Miller & Neil Kocks and additional support from Alex & Rebecca Tilly.
This time however our biggest cheer goes to Maggie O'Shea for the outstanding 1.5 x 2.0 metre! banner - put all the other clubs at the competition in the shade. This superb banner comes with us everywhere from now on - it's next outing is the Grade 2 National Championships - (got your tickets from Graham yet?)
Our heartfelt thanks Maggie - nice one!

Grade 2 Competition, Chippenham, 28th Oct 2001

Key Competition for our Grade 2 Squad. Each with individual aspirations and goals at this senior competition. Judging at this level gets much more analytical, and minor faults are accurately recorded. By-and-large these were good performances by Ministry Of Air leading females, their results reflect quality performances and quality judging.

Alex Bowden was competing at Grade 2 for the first time, she coped with the pressure really well in a group of 65 entrants. Came a very respectable 40th, and will be very well placed to improve this steadily through the start of 2002.

Lauren Shipman was in the same Group (Under 15 F) and finished 13th. She was trying out a 6.2 tariff Voluntary routine, in preparation for the National Championships at the end of November. She improved her overall position for the competition from 16th last time out to 13th. Shows great promise for the Nationals.

Sarah Shillabeer was also competing at Grade 2 for the first time, and had flown in from Germany for this one chance at the National Championships in 2001. Her Set and Voluntary went reasonably well, she had introduced a Rudi (1 & 1/2 Twisting Front Somersault) as a compulsory element into her routine, and this flowed well. Overall marks very slightly down on her goals. No doubt that she'll be a major player at the Grade 2 Championships at the end of 2002.

Kayleigh McCarthy tested her 6.8 tariff Voluntary under the scrutiny of the National judges. Together with a really fine Set, this took her into 6th place after the second round. Unusually in the Finals round she stumbled, and dropped back to 10th place.

Please join us in wishing Lauren and Kayleigh every success in the Grade 2 Nationals Championships. It's their first 'Nationals', and the next few weeks are going to be very important to them to hone their routines to their best. Please come and support them on the day. See Terry or Graham for details of a great day out.

After the competition unusually we went to TGI Fridays, (Terry was nearly refused entry because he wanted to pay with his McDonalds loyalty card). High on Cola (or something!) Alex and Kayleigh played some very silly games with ice-cubes - but apparently we will be allowed back someday (if only to apologise)!

St. Crispins Invitation Synchronised - Wokingham, Berks   Our annual outing to Wokingham for the fun of Synchronised competition. We took along guests - Paul Callender from Nova to partner Anna Threlfall, and (not surprisingly) Jason Holland from Apex to partner Graham Williams

Good fun had by all, and even some good trampolining. 6 medals from 20 competitors - very creditable performances.
Claire Horncastle & Helen Bangs picked 3rd in their group, Kaylegh McCarthy & Lauren Shipman 3rd in theirs just 0.9 away from 2nd place. Gold was always going to go to Graham Williams & Jason Holland short of a major slip-up. They didn't slip up - and slammed in 2 massive tariff routines for the second and final rounds, great spectacle, enjoyed by all the crowd.
Charlotte O'Shea & Katharine Arnold were lying 2nd in their group after 2 rounds, with a genuine chance of winning - then too much adrenaline overcame sensibilities and the chance went... - next time girls!

A great day out, and afterwards (unusually!) some of us went to McDonalds to celebrate, and wandered over to Aldenham to unwind on the trampolines and play silly games.

Our sympathies were with poor Gemma Healey, who suffered an unusual incident that morning, in the shower (or so she says), that put her out of the competition with a clearly very painful wrenched neck. Good news for Charlie O'Shea, she got to compete twice as a late replacement for Gemma.(& thanks to Emma's parents for taking Gemma home early).

Grade 3 - 4 Competition, Sumners Leisure Centre, Harlow, 14th Oct 2001

Our full Grade 3 & 4 Squad turned out for this key competition.   Fantastic day for the Club - unfortunately just a couple of individual slips.

Over 18s did very well, Sarah Shillabeer turned in 2 first rate routines, pulling off Gold, so this time Emma Message had to be content with Silver, [& introducing a really beautiful 1 & 3/4 Front S/S (tucked) into her voluntary routine.]   Each also qualifying for Grade 2.
First time competing for Ministry Of Air, Anna Threlfall easily won Grade 4 (despite a repeated move in the final round) and qualified to move up to Grade 3.

Under 18s fared less well. In Grade 3 Hannah Barker failed to complete her Set, and unusually Christine O'Brien barely managed to start hers! Both girls then showed true determination and got on with the job of showing exactly how good their overall marks could have been "if only" - no doubt that these two will be straight back more hungry than ever in January's outing. Really tough break for Chrissy, who'd put in hours and hours of dedicated work off-and-on the trampoline over the last three months. It can be a cruel sport, one slip and the competition can be all over in a second.

In the younger groups.
Grade 3 U15 Alex Bowden, stamped her classy foot down and showed the judges she's ready for Grade 2 also (we'd already booked her place for 28th October).
Grace and Sara Kocks were each venturing into a higher grade for the first time, and each handled the higher routine requirements well, and each were well placed as a result. Unluckily they just fell short of the qualifying mark for the next grade. Let's hope that hard work over the next three months will reap it's own reward.
Finally welcome to our other newcomer to the Graded events. Charlie O'Shea - second competition after first stepping on a trampoline six months ago, put in a really mature performance at Grade 4, and showed some of the flair we've recognised as ready to blossom over the months ahead. Nerves showed in the first routine, then for the second round she performed the same routine, with a much improved form score.

Three Trophies, Four 'Qualifiers' & a staggering eleven Personal Best performances from Sarah, Emma, Grace, Sara, Anna, Alex & Charlie. [See the link for full ranking details.]
Apree Bounce
Again very special thanks to Paul Callender (from Nova T.C.), as Judging representative and Kayleigh McCarthy, along for team support (and to Peter Gledhill - Phoenix Flyers - for a valued bit of psychological support at the right time).
A great day out, and afterwards (unusually!) some of us went to McDonalds to celebrate, and wandered over to Welwyn Garden City to unwind on the trampolines .

Brentwood Invitational; Open Competition A second friendly start to the season. Here we took 18 members, 4 from the top squad, out to try their skills ready for the forthcoming Graded Competitions, - for 5 it was their first competition.
The format of the competition was one that permitted the best in East England to come and display their individual excellences. With 4 Great Britain Youth Internationals around, and dozens of top quality Grade 1 and Grade 2s, it wasn't all that surprising that our novices were really up against it. They were there to try out their performances for future competitions, and all really stood the test well.

Our only Trophy came from the lower end of the competition, thanks to Matthew Govier. 2nd in the Under 18 Male on his very first outing. Well done Matt, let's have some more silverware soon.
One of the most outstanding class acts came from Claire Horncastle's Set routine, but frustratingly the judges failed to agree. Next time Claire.... Also really delightful routines from Katherine Arnold.
In the Ladies competition our top performers did well enough, but failed to hit the heights that we know they are capable of. Going all out, Kayleigh McCarthy slipped up on the simple Set routine, yet went on to produce a 2nd Round routine with 6.8 Tariff (yes, that's the difficulty, not the form!). Lauren Shipman went through the motions with her Set, and then hit true form with a equally big 6.1 Tariff Voluntary. Alex Bowden settled to the task, and revealed the unusual Voluntary move she's been secretly preparing. It went well, and made a few Judges blink. Finally Sarah Shillabeer, using this competition as warm-up for her Grade 3 in couple of weeks, put down 2 first rate routines, (even if there was a minor rearrangement of some of her shaped somersaults).

On a note of personal performances, Rebecca Tilley improved her individual Personal Best scores dramatically, and Adam Miller and Charlie O'Shea started their careers off with a great couple of scores.

Great support from Hannah Barker - Judging, & Sharon Miller - Marshalling, and again very special thanks to Paul Callender (from Nova T.C.), our other Judging representative. We also had Chris Tilley along for team support. - thanks again to the parents who did their jobs well.

Galaxy Invitational; Novices & Beginners   Nice friendly start to the season, with 21 of our less experienced venturing north of Watford to Bletchley - for 19 it was their very first competition. Stunning maps and directions managed to lose all but one car (including Terry) but this just helped the enthusiasm to be at the competition, rather than getting seasick on the Milton Keynes roundabout frenzy.

We all got really scared as we started the first round. "What is happening?" "I can't do it, everyone is looking at me" "I've forgotten my routine", then a few frights as one or two moves came near the edges, and suddenly, loads of cheers and "I've done it!!". Second round came easier, less worries and more excitement with some of the more advanced of our party trying a somersault in their Voluntary routines.

Everyone did really well, as always a few surprises with the most unexpected people pulling off great routines, and a couple of normally steadier people showing that they can make mistakes too. It is the start of the experience trail, with indications of great performances to come in the months and years ahead.
Fine results with Trophies for Lucy Dyson and Chris Tilley, and Team First medals for our Under 9 Females Ailis Tully, Francesca Dawson, Katherine Souto-Mills, Kaylee Miller & Mia Kouroushi plus Team First for Under 18 Females Amy Scott, Lucy Dyson & Rebecca Tilley.

On a note of personal performances, Lucy Dyson and Amy Scott (both at only their second competition) improved their individual Personal Best scores dramatically, and Chris Tilley starts his record with great couple of scores.

Great support from Hannah Barker - Judging, & Kayleigh McCarthy - Coaching, and a very special thanks to Paul Callender (from Nova T.C. who also visits us Thursday evenings) for driving out from London to be our other Judging representative. We also had Adam Miller, Alicia Barrett & Claire Horncastle along for team support. - thanks also to the parents who did their jobs well (keeping away from their children and cheering).
A great day out, some of us went to McDonalds to celebrate, and a few older guys wandered over to Welwyn Garden City to unwind on the trampolines there for an hour (and we just might have a photo in a few weeks time of Terry and Chris Tilley getting up to something most unusual?)

Graham representing Ministry Of Air, competing with the best athletes assembled from Great Britain in the National Championships. The event was staged in the National Indoor Arena, a truly superb stage to hold these championships.

In the Over 18 Male Class, Graham showed us a stunning Set routine, scoring 26.1. In the second round he used a very steady 10.4 Tariff Vol, with good clean form, and improved his personal best score over 2 rounds (PB2) to 60.4, and finished 14th. The winner was Lee Brearley, who represented Great Britain in the 2000 Olympics in Australia.  Jason Holland, (our friend from Apex T.C. Reading and Graham's Synchro. partner this year) came close behind Graham at 17th.

Then came the Elite Men competition - the premier event - all comers from all age groups.
Graham faltered slightly, his set was slightly off his best Form, and he had to repeat a move in his voluntary, in order to keep the routine flowing when things got a bit tough. Nevertheless still finished a very credible 19th in Great Britain. Lee Brearley was the winner in this Elite class also and became British Champion for the third year in succession.

This year was easily Graham's best ever Championships. Good overall performances in each routine. A Personal Best, and quality results against probably the strongest Male field in years. He came away delighted, feels that he has concluded a great season and confidently looks forward to trying to raise the standards again next year.

A very special thanks to Sharon & Adam Miller, and to Sarah Shillabeer for their support at this competition, and to all those at the Club who wished Graham well at the U.K.'s premier event.

Lee Brierley And finally ... Terry Williams was honoured to be selected as Tariff Judge for this prestigious event, reflecting his standing, skill and continuous support to our sport. Terry is one of 15 current National Trampoline Judges; he is considered one of the country's most accurate Tariff Judges and has been selected for this role at the National Championships for eight successive years.

Grade 2 - North West - Manchester Kayleigh McCarthy joined Lauren Shipman on the Grade 2 circuit. We travelled to Manchester on a sunny Saturday afternoon, relaxed in the evening, then arrived fresh on the Sunday ready for a big day for each of them.

Kayleigh (Under 18 Female) settled very well into the higher grade competition. Three fabulous routines, including the introduction of a 1 & 3/4 Front somersault into her 5.8 difficulty voluntary routine. She finished 9th. and raised her personal best score over two rounds (PB2) to 55.8. Serious trampolining from a talented performer.

Lauren (Under 15 Female) showed her obvious talent and style. She raised her personal best score for the set routine (PB1) and continued on to finish 16th in a huge field of 60 competitors.

But the best news is that BOTH girls qualified for the Grade 2 National Championships later this year, AND Qualified to move up to Grade 1 next year. An amazing result for the Club and a perfect result for each of them. Thank-you girls!

Finally a very special thanks to Sarah Shillabeer (Our newest coach - and a Grade 3 competitor] for her splendid support at this competition. Here are the results, [also browse the Rankings page.]

The first event of the day was the Elite Men class, the very best in Great Britain, and our boys came away with 5th place. Great creditable result.

Grade 3 - 6 - Ipswich The GCSE exam timetable decimated our usual strong U18 representation, and gave a great chance for the youngsters to step in and show the strength in depth in our still young club. Once again our club grabbed more than our share of the medals - four gongs from ten competitors.
Rachel Quinn started this off with an incredible piece of faultless stylish trampolining that left her competitors stranded.
At the other end of the age spectrum Sara Kocks banged out a 1.7 tariff Voluntary round that could so easily have gained first place if she'd shown better form in the first round.
No medals, but Grace Kocks continues to get better & better marks, came fifth in a very strong field, and Claire Horncastle produced fine form marks, unusually only bettered by three people tying for first place.
The day wore on and on and on, we're all getting tired - hanging in there for our last two girls in the Grade 3 Elite groups, and finally...
Emma Message started quietly, then slammed down a quality 4.5 tariff Vol, and that race was suddenly over.
Concluding with practically the last routines of the day, Kayleigh McCarthy produced three solid performances including a Rudy (front somersault with one & a half Twists) - a taste of her big moves still to come!   Clear winner of a strong Grade 3 field, and easy qualification to Grade 2.

Three Winners, Emma Message, Kayleigh McCarthy & Rachel Quinn,
One other Trophy, 2nd place for Sara Kocks
Two qualifiers, Kayleigh McCarthy attained Grade 2 qualification marks and moves onto the National circuit from here on.   Grace Kocks achieved required qualification marks for Grade 3.
Two of our squad improved their Personal Best scores for the First Round routine (PB1). Rachel Quinn & Claire Horncastle
And Four also improved their Personal Best scores for the total over the first 2 rounds (PB2). Emma Message, Grace Kocks, Claire Horncastle & Sara Kocks.
Great progress again from a diminished Grade 3 - 6 squad! Finally, well done to our 'First Timer' Jonathan Elliott, great start to your career, settled in at Grade 5.

Finally a very special thanks to Neil Kocks & Angie Kay-Jessop (Our Bricket Wood Coach at her first competition also) for splendid support as competition Marshalls. Here are the results, [also browse the Rankings page.]

Graham at Elmbridge Grade 1 Grade 1 - Walton-On-Thames  Graham's third entry this year in the Mens Elite / Open category. Disappointing first round score, followed by a second round with increased difficulty, but without enough form to impress the judges. However a smaller field with some of the big stars missing meant that he went into the finalist's round. Best advice was to decrease the difficulty back to the level from the last outing, and this produced much better from, and he finished in 6th place in Great Britain, probably his best ever position. Great result, and yet shows that from now to the National Championships greater emphasis is required on form.

Grade 1 - South Shields  Graham's second attempt this year in the Mens Elite / Open category. First round went reasonable, 25.6 - not so good as at Wales - but might be enough. We'd increased the difficulty of the Vol. up to 10.4 with 7 simple double somersaults. Coach thought the routine was not up to the mark, but the judges thought otherwise, and he scored 59.8 - passing the requirement to Qualify for the Mens National Championship. This was also a Personal Best over two rounds. Well done Graham, and thanks Christine O'Brien for enduring the 600 mile round trip, with Terry's driving and appalling taste in music, to support our man.

Grade 2 - Bracknell  Lauren's first venture into this arena, and our Club's first Grade 2 competitor. Up against 60 of the best Grade 2s in U.K., and with a new format for the competition timetable, Lauren struggled to produce the form that we know she can produce, and had to be content with 'the first one is the worst one' experience. She completed both routines, and introduced a Full Twisting Back Somersault into her Vol. routine (however with a couple of repeated moves also). Better luck next time Lauren.

St. Crispins 2001   4 'Novices' from our club, went to Wokingham, along with four slightly more experienced members hoping to improve their individual performances & to mentor the youngsters.
Group 2
The youngsters did absolutely fine, 3 got into the Finalists round (Top 10), and the girls came away with Team 1st. Very well done to Claire & Sarah, who have entered the Club Personal Best rankings at just about equal 15th. Should be fun to watch these two stylish girls battle it out in the years to come. Congratulations to Kaylie & Helen, our first entrants from Bricket Wood, Helen pulled off the biggest Vol in her Group in the Finals.
Heather was going like a dream in the first round, then leaped for the End Deck after completing the best Set routine she's done so far. Quality's fine Heather, let's settle the nerves a bit more. Nonetheless, pulled off her big Vol. at 2.0 Tariff and came away pleased with that.
Group 1
Alex & Kayleigh went for the experience, and got it!!. These girls were in amongst some seriously good Grade 1 & Grade 2 competitors. No ambition to gain medals here, but both improved their Personal Best scores.
Alex completed a 4.1 Tariff Vol, with 7 somersaults, in preparation for Grade 3 in June. She continues to make great progress on Form and enters the top 10 PB1 and PB2 ranking list.
Kayleigh tried out a 5.3 Tariff Vol, planned as her Vol. for Grade 3 and her Set at Grade 2 (we all hope). She hit the button first time with this new Vol. & raised her PB2 to 55.3. Mission accomplished!
Last Minute entry, Graham hopped on the bed, and after a reasonable pass at the Set routine, slammed in two 10.4 Tariff routines each with 7 double somersaults, and grabbed first place.
Great result, except this sneaky entry kept Kayleigh out of the Finals round. Big boys play rough!

Plan went off course. He scored 26.4 in a most amazing tight well controlled Set routine putting him in 6th position. Then unusually a lapse of concentrated focus brought his voluntary to an inexplicable halt after two moves. Oops!!

Mid Season Synchro; Grade 1 - Wales   Graham and (old) mate Jason Holland (Apex T.C.), each showing no signs of the previous evening, met to compete in this preparatory competition for the National Synchronised Championships
Bit of a struggle to establish rapport in their Set routine, then they deliberately kept the difficulty down in the second round, carefully managing their synchronisation and form. This bought them into third place, less than two marks behind pairs who were using much greater difficulty. Now's the time for bravery!!
Graham & Jason dramatically increased their difficulty for the third round, and controlled their quality de-synchronisation at the same time. This threw a gauntlet into the faces of the pairs still to come, who had no extra tariff to offer, and all the pressure to raise their game.
Nerves started to jangle, neither pair could manage it, and our boys came away with Gold!!1st

Grade 3 - 6 - Furzefield, Potters Bar  Good turn out from the Club for this Graded competition.
Great competition that will hold many great memories, not least being Heather Phillips' spectacular start to our day and her final routine, involving 2 somersaults, an unexpected back landing, and an End deck, exciting stuff!

Emma Nicholson (4th) settled well into the higher Grade 4, and will soon be on the move again to Grade 4. Bad luck to Nicola Wilson, Helen Mann & Nicola Hart showing unplanned and unusual endings to their first routines, but getting the act together for the second. These girls have a tremendous future with the Club, and continue to impress Terry & Graham (if not the Judges).

Middle of the day and suddenly Emma Message struck Gold!   Made it look easy to us, she played safe with slightly lowered tariff in the final after gaining a slight lead. Great strategy. This raised the game for the other hopefuls in the Club.... then it started raining medals and results!!

Three Winners from Emma Message, Kayleigh McCarthy & Lauren Shipman,
Four other 3rd place Trophies for Alex Bowden, Fraser McPherson, Heather Phillips & Jenny Harrison
Nine Team 1st Medals for Christine O'Brien, Hannah Barker, Kayleigh McCarthy, Helen Mann, Jenny Harrison, Nicola Hart, Amy Scott, Molly Pallett, Kathryn Collett.
Five qualifiers, four attained Grade 3 qualification marks, Kayleigh McCarthy, Emma Message, Hannah Barker & Alex Bowden. Lauren Shipman qualified for Grade 2 and moves onto the National circuit from here on.
Eight of our squad improved their Personal Best scores for the First Round routine (PB1). Fraser McPherson, Heather Phillips, Emma Nicholson, Christine O'Brien, Emma Message, Lauren Shipman, Hannah Barker & Kayleigh McCarthy
And eight also improved their Personal Best scores for the total over the first 2 rounds (PB2). Fraser McPherson, Jenny Harrison, Emma Nicholson, Christine O'Brien, Emma Message, Hannah Barker, Lauren Shipman & Kayleigh McCarthy.

Lauren Shipman ended the day for us at one end of the hall with a fantastic performance including a Double Back Somersault finish - brought the house down! Clear winner of a strong Grade 3 field, and easy qualification to Grade 2.
This one's got my name on it!
Meanwhile at the other end our Grade 4 U18 team came storming home to take 1st place Team, with Kayleigh McCarthy the outright winner by nearly three marks, smashing through the Grade 3 qualifying mark, and producing the second highest marks throughout the day from all Clubs in East England, all Age Groups, all Grades!!.

We can't all win, but came close this day! Finally, well done to our 'First Timers' Alex Bowden, Amy Scott & Molly Pallett, great start to your careers.

... Then we hit McDonalds in party mood, and giggles (Molly - what were you drinking?), Terry had a little nap (it's his age you see), then off we went to carry on training at Gosling - like we hadn't had enough trampoline for one day!!)

Here are the results (thanks to Becky Tilley for recording these through the day). [also browse the Rankings page.]

Flower Cup Flower Cup 14th Flower Cup 2001   Lauren & Graham competed in Holland at the 2001 Flower Cup - an open Invitational International, welcoming over 200 competitors from around the world. Great social occasion plus some seriously difficult trampolining! (plus we got to see Lauren eat Indonesian food with Chopsticks - well worth the trip just for this!!!)

Class 1 Men
Heavily suffering from Flu, Graham wasn't fit enough to compete - but he did!!
The field was amazingly strong, featuring 5 men who'd competed at the Olympic Games for their countries!! He did a dreadful Set (by his standards) and was practically last after the first round, then came a stronger Vol. with 4 double somersaults, and this moved him up the field to finish 30th out of 51 entrants. (The top guys were doing several Triple somersaults, and quite a lot fell off in the attempts. Real fireworks!)
Class 2 Female
Lauren had an amazingly successful venture. She twice managed to fully perform a brand new routine, which is equivalent to Grade 1 in Great Britain. Not bad for a Grade 3. Her first routine went really well, but unluckily after the 10th move (a double back somersault), she lost control a little and landed on the End Deck, which cost her a place or two at least. Her second routine hadn't quite the form of the first, but stayed on the spot for the ending, so scored more. This put her into 28th place, out of 45 entrants from 16 nations.
Lauren's Set? Crash Dive, Ball-Out Barani (Tucked), Barani (Tucked), Back Somersault (Straight), Rudy, Straddle Jump, Barani (Piked), Back Somersault (Piked), Barani (Straight), Double Back Somersault (Tucked).

Fantastic result. 3rd Team place, just misses the cut to go to the National Championship, and individually placed Hannah, 7th and Amy, 12th.

Grade 3 - Grade 6, Grundy Park, Cheshunt, Herts.     Most of our performances were in line with the great progress everyone is making, with medals coming from Emma Message 3rd in Grade 4 O18 & from Kayleigh McCarthy, Jenny Harrison & Hannah Barker, 1st place Team in Under 18s.
Congratulations to Emma Nicholson, Nicola Wilson, Emma Message, all with new PBs (Personal Bests)
Also Lauren Shipman survived her first Grade 3 competition, scoring well in the second round.
And Grace Kocks has moved up an age group, settled well to the new routine, but showed nerves amongst the older girls, just missed an individual medal, getting closer Grace!
Finally, well done to our 'First Timer' Kayleigh McCarthy, just missed an individual medal.
Great start to the season, well done everyone! ...
